In a recent report, Foot Mercato mentioned that Aston Villa are set to rival AS Roma for Rennes right-back Lorenez Assignon this summer. It has been stated that the Villans are keeping a keen eye on the French talent ahead of a potential move for him this off-season.
Assignon’s Impressive Loan Spell In The Premier League
The 24-year-old had a decent loan spell at Burnley recently as he produced a series of impressive performances on the right side of their defence. Assignon scored one goal and secured a couple of assists in 15 matches for the Lancashire club in the Premier League.
The French sensation proved his worth at both ends of the pitch by averaging 2.3 tackles, 1.3 interceptions, 2.7 clearances, 0.6, shots, 0.9 key passes and 0.9 dribbles per 90 minutes in Premier League. He even distributed the ball relatively well based on his pass success rate of 75.6% in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at his parent club Rennes will run out in the summer of 2027 which could make it tough for Aston Villa to sign him on the cheap later this year.
What Will Assignon Bring To Aston Villa?
Assignon can do a little bit of everything on the right flank. He is a good tackler of the ball and can make some important interceptions for his team on the defensive third of the pitch.
The French full-back usually clears the danger when needed and can even put in a tireless shift offensively for his team. He mainly operates as a right-back but can also serve as a right-sided wide player if asked to do so by his manager.
Assignon would bring more quality and depth to Aston Villa boss Unai Emery’s match-day squad. He has what it takes to nail down a regular first-team spot at the West Midlands club in the coming years.
Assignon already knows the Premier League well from his recent loan spell at Burnley and won’t take much time to adjust to life in the Premier League. At 24, he has his peak years ahead of him and could be a terrific addition to Unai Emery’s squad this summer. Assignon might even help the Villans challenge across all fronts in the future if Emery can snap him up soon.
