It’s no secret that Chelsea have been a long admirer of Barcelona midfielder Frankie de Jong. Now to finally get him, the Premier League club are formulating an offer and could launch an official move in the coming weeks, as per Fichajes.
Frenkie de Jong’s story at Barcelona so far
Looking at Frenkie de Jong‘s successful stint with Ajax, Barcelona decided to spend €75 million on acquiring his services in 2019. However, the signing has had its ups and downs. While the player has been decent enough, he has failed to build a legacy of his own.
de Jong has an excellent hold on the ball, which makes him resistance-proof. He is a good carrier of the ball and likes to play short passes. He also covers a lot of ground and helps his team regain possession. However, the midfielder often faces criticism for lacking creativity on the field.
The Dutch footballer has managed to get only two goals and zero assists in 30 games this season. It’s evident that a player of his calibre should have more goal contributions. Important to mention that he has struggled with multiple injuries over the past few seasons.
Will Chelsea be able to convince Frenkie de Jong?
Despite all these facts, Frenkie de Jong remains a lucrative offer for many clubs across Europe. Chelsea is one of them as the player is appreciated by the management. Hence, the English club are eyeing a summer move to sign him.
The Blues didn’t have a good season as per their standards and they urgently need to reinforce their unit. The arrival of Frenkie will add a lot of value and depth to their midfield. Being 27 years old, he still has many years at the top.
Adding to Chelsea’s favour, Barcelona‘s continued financial crisis will tempt them to sell the quality player to raise funds. Recently reports emerged that the Spanish giant are willing to offload de Jong because of his high salary and the need to raise funds for the new signing.
Reportedly, Chelsea are preparing a €80 million offer to sign the player. However, it will be interesting to see if Frankie will prefer moving to Stamford Bridge as they don’t have a Champions League spot for next season.
