Newcastle United have been actively participating in the transfer market as they aim to build a strong unit. They have made up their mind to retain solid performers and acquire new talents if needed. The club want to fight for the most prestigious trophies and titles.
The Magpies sent their scouts to watch 16-year-old Sunderland midfielder Chris Rigg play last weekend, according to Chronicle Live. The club have position feelings about the youngster and believe he could be a future star if nourished well.
Who is Chris Rigg?
Chris Rigg joined Sunderland when he was in primary school and has been associated with the club since then. He has made good progress over the years and made his debut for the senior side last year. Though he isn’t a regular starter, he comes off the bench frequently to show his potential.
The 16-year-old midfielder’s first competitive goal came against Crewe Alexandra in the EFL Cup last year. With that goal, he became the youngest scorer in the club’s history. He has featured in 21 games this season so far, netting thrice.
Rigg is a left-footed player who feels comfortable with the ball at his feet. He seems like a traditional ‘number eight’ player who can make things happen in the final third. However, he is also equipped enough to play as a proper defensive midfielder.
A new home for Chris Rigg?
Chris Rigg’s huge potential has attracted interest from major clubs across Europe including Liverpool and Manchester City. However, he hasn’t got enough game time as compared to the previous season. Hence, the player might be willing to leave Sunderland in search of game time.
Newcastle United can bank on the opportunity and invest in the youngster. While he will not have direct access to the senior team, he can continue to improve with the youth side. Once he gets fully prepared, they can promote him and give him enough game time.
