Chelsea have been one of the most active clubs in the transfer market over the past two seasons. They are in constant search of valuable player to strengthen their squad. Considering another move in that direction, they are looking to make a move for Newcastle United defender Sven Botman, according to TEAMtalk.
The Blues see him as a potential replacement for Thiago Silva, who is in the twilight of his career and is likely to exit the club as a free agent at the end of the season. To replace the veteran defender, the club are considering investing in the Dutch defender.
Sven Botman has established himself
Sven Botman started his professional career at the highest level with Ajax before switching to Ligue 1 club Lille. He was eventually lured away by his current club, Newcastle United, for €40 million on a five-year contract in the summer of 2022.
Since arriving in the English league, Botman has taken huge strides in his career. He has established himself as a reliable and one of the best defenders in the league. He has featured in 20 games this season, contributing two goals and as many assists so far.
The 24-year-old is averaging 1.1 tackles, 0.4 interceptions and 3.2 clearances per game. He is a physically strong figure, which makes him an ideal choice in the Premier League. With a high passing rate, he helps build the play from the back (stats via whoscored).
Chelsea are keen on signing a defender
Chelsea have made it clear that they want to sign a defender in the summer transfer window. They have registered interest in Ousmane Diomande apart from Sven Botman. However, the acquisition of the latter won’t be a piece of cake at all.
Newcastle United will hesitate to sell their hot property to direct rivals. They aren’t having a good campaign and will be hoping for a bounce back in the next season. Hence, selling the performing players isn’t the best solution at all. However, Botman could be open to new challenge and might force his exit. In such a situation, the Magpies will be tempted to sell the youngster.
