In a recent print edition, Gazzetta dello Sport (Page 8) claimed that Arsenal are leading the race to sign Sporting CP forward Viktor Gyokeres. It has been stated that the Gunners are leading the chase along with Chelsea in the race to recruit the Swedish talent.
Gyokeres’ Impressive Form In Portuguese Football
Gyokeres is having a decent campaign at the Portuguese club after putting in a string of impressive displays at the heart of their defence. The Swedish talent has featured in 39 matches for Sporting this season, scoring 36 goals and securing 14 assists in all competitions.
The 25-year-old has been a decent performer in the final third based on his average of 3.4 shots, 1.8 key passes and 2.3 dribbles per 90 minutes in Liga Portugal. He has even been accurate when distributing possession in the opponent’s half after completing 74.8% of his attempted passes in the Portuguese first division (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Portuguese club will run out in the summer of 2028. Hence, it won’t be easy for the Gunners to land him on the cheap in the upcoming transfer window.
Is Gyokeres A Decent Option For Arsenal Boss Mikel Arteta?
Gyokeres is proficient at creating a yard of space for himself to get some shots in at goal. He has got the eye to play some decisive passes on the offensive end of the field and can make a few driving runs with the ball in the opponent’s half.
The Swedish talent can even use his strong 1.87m frame to hold possession up for his team. He has proven himself to be a natural goal-scorer in Portuguese football. However, only time will tell whether Gyokeres can maintain his good form in Premier League football if the Gunners manage to snap him up this summer.
At 25, the Swede has his best years ahead of him which makes him a good option for Arsenal to consider in the summer transfer period. He would add more firepower to the North London club’s frontline and would offer some serious competition for Gabriel Jesus for a regular starting spot in Mikel Arteta’s starting XI.
Therefore, the Gunners should consider going all out to recruit Gyokeres when the transfer window commences later this year.
