In a recent print edition, O Jogo mentioned that Arsenal are among the clubs hoping to sign Sporting forward Viktor Gyokeres. It has been stated that the Gunners could face competition in the form of Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund and AC Milan in the race to land the Swedish striker in the summer.
Gyokeres’ Impressive Run Of Form In Portuguese Football
Gyokeres is having a productive campaign at the Portuguese club after putting in a lot of impressive displays as the focal point of their attack. The Swedish talent has made 35 appearances for Sporting this season, banging in 32 goals and earning 11 assists in the process across all fronts.
The 25-year-old has been a decent performer in the final third as he is averaging 3.1 shots, 1.8 key passes and 2.3 dribbles per 90 minutes in Liga Portugal. However, he has lacked quality when linking up play with others around him in the opponent’s half based on his pass success rate of 74.7% in the Portuguese top-flight (stats via whoscored).
Gyokeres is under contract at the Portuguese club until the summer of 2028. Hence, it won’t be easy for the Gunners to land him on the cheap at the end of this season.
Should Arsenal Move In For Gyokeres In The Summer?
Gyokeres is proficient at finding a yard of space for himself to get a few strikes in on-target. He has got the vision to create a few decent chances for his teammates in the final third and can make a few driving runs with the ball in the attacking end of the field.
The Sweden international is primarily a centre-forward but can also operate as a wide player on either flank if asked to do so. However, he needs to work on improving his ball distribution in the opposition half if he wants to be successful at the highest level.
Gyokeres is good enough to fight for a regular starting spot at Arsenal next season. He would no doubt bring more goals to Mikel Arteta‘s attack. The Swedish sensation already has got some experience in English football and won’t take much time to settle into life at the North London club. Thus, the Gunners would be wise to move in for Gyokeres later this year.
