In a recent print edition, Sport mentioned that Tottenham Hotspur are among the clubs looking to sign Barcelona star Frenkie de Jong. It has been stated that Spurs would have to rival Paris Saint-Germain in the race to land the Dutch midfielder in the summer.
De Jong’s Impressive Numbers In Spanish Football This Season
De Jong is having a solid campaign at the Catalan club after putting in a run of impressive displays for them at the centre of the park. The Dutch talent has featured in 26 matches for Barca this season, scoring a couple of goals in the process across all fronts.
The 26-year-old has proven his worth in both halves by averaging 2.3 tackles, 0.7 interceptions, 1.4 clearances, 1.1 key passes and 0.7 dribbles per 90 minutes in La Liga. He has also been tidy when distributing the ball from midfield after completing 93% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Nou Camp will expire in the summer of 2026, so it won’t be easy for Spurs to sign him on a cut-price deal at the end of this campaign.
Is De Jong A Good Choice For Tottenham Hotspur Boss Angelos Postecoglu?
De Jong is a tough-tackling midfielder who can make a few timely interceptions for his side in the middle of the park. He doesn’t mind clearing the danger when the opposition are on the front foot and can make some decent plays for his teammates up top.
The Netherlands international can even make a few clever runs with the ball from midfield. Someone with de Jong’s skillset and experience would no doubt be a terrific signing for Tottenham boss Angelos Postecoglu to pull off at the end of this season.
At 26, the Dutch sensation’s best years are ahead of him which makes him a great choice for Spurs to consider later this year. He is good enough to earn a regular starting spot at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium next season.
With all things considered, the North London club should focus on trying everything they can to win the race to sign de Jong in the summer. However, only time will tell whether he can make a smooth transition to life in England.
