In a recent edition of the Last Word on Spurs podcast, journalist Ben Jacobs mentioned that Tottenham Hotspur have identified Lille striker Jonathan David as a target. Jacobs said,
“Zirkzee is an interesting one as we talk about the summer, there are two left-field names if we can call them that, one is Zirkzee and one if Santi Gimenez.
“Zirkzee is one to watch, Gimenez is one to watch and Jonathan David is a third name to throw into the mix because he was looked at under Paratici and Conte and we need to understand if they will return under the new recruitment team and Ange Postecoglou.”
David’s Impressive Form In French Football
David has enjoyed a decent season at the French club after putting in a series of productive displays as the spearhead of their attack. The Canadian talent has found the back of the net on 11 occasions and earned six assists in 26 appearances for Lille during this campaign in various competitions.
The 24-year-old has led the line well and deserves some credit for averaging 2.2 shots, 0.7 key passes and 0.6 dribbles per 90 minutes in Ligue 1. He has even been accurate when distributing possession in the final third based on his pass completion rate of 81.2% in the top tier of French football (stats via whoscored).
Is David A Good Choice For Tottenham Hotspur Boss Angelos Postecoglu?
David can engineer some space for himself to get some strikes in at goal and has got the eye to create some decent chances for his teammates up top. He is a good dribbler with the ball as well and has proven himself to be a good finisher in Ligue 1.
We can expect David to bring more firepower to Tottenham head coach Angelos Postecoglu’s frontline. He is good enough to earn a regular starting spot at the North London club in the coming seasons.
At 24, David has his best years ahead of him which makes him a great choice for Spurs to consider this January or at the end of this season. However, it remains to be seen whether he can cope with the physical side and high intensity of Premier League football.
