Xabi Alonso discussed rumors linking him to Liverpool. Jurgen Klopp announced on Friday that he will leave his position as Liverpool manager after this season. Klopp joined Liverpool in 2015 and won the Champions League in 2019 before leading the club to its first league title in 30 years the following year. Klopp’s departure is shocking considering his contract was meant to expire in 2026. Former Liverpool player Alonso is the front-runner to succeed Klopp.
Xabi Alonso on Liverpool rumours
Xabi Alonso revealed he’s concentrating on his job at Bayer Leverkusen and not thinking about taking over from Jurgen Klopp, who surprised everyone by announcing he’s leaving Liverpool after this season. Klopp’s departure ends a successful nine-year period where Liverpool won the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, and League Cup, transforming the club’s fortunes.
Since assistant boss Pep Lijnders is also leaving, ex-Liverpool midfielder Alonso is now the top choice to take over from Klopp. Alonso is having a good season with Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga. However, Alonso says he’s only thinking about his current job.

“Speculation is normal, my focus is here on Bayer Leverkusen. I am very happy at Leverkusen with my players at the moment. [It was a] big surprise in Liverpool, of course — for what Jurgen did in Liverpool I have great respect and admiration,” he said.
“I am really happy here. I am enjoying my work here. I am feeling each day and each game is a challenge. I am on a beautiful journey in Leverkusen. The next one, I don’t know. I am thinking about where I am right now. I am in a great place and I am enjoying. Saturday is what really matters. I don’t really care what is going to happen in the future right now,” he added.

This season, Alonso has been linked to his old teams twice. Earlier, Spanish media thought he might become the coach for Real Madrid in the summer. But those connections faded away when it was confirmed that Carlo Ancelotti extended his contract with the Madrid club.
