Birmingham’s manager, Wayne Rooney, has been sacked. He was only in charge for 15 games, and Tom Brady and the Blues’ board of directors made a swift decision. Rooney, a famous Manchester United and England player, took over in October 2023, but he was fired because the squad performed poorly – they lost nine games and earned only 10 points out of a potential 45.
Wayne Rooney sacked
Wayne Rooney got sacked after being in charge for less than three months. The team didn’t win any games, and now they’re close to being relegated. Rooney became the manager in October when the team was doing better, but now they’re in 20th place, just six points above the relegation zone.
Since Rooney became the boss, the team lost nine out of 15 games and only won two. They haven’t won any of the last five matches.
“Birmingham City has today parted company with manager, Wayne Rooney and first team coach Carl Robinson,” the club stated.
“Despite their best efforts, results have not met the expectations that were made clear at the outset. Therefore, the board feels that a change in management is in the best interests of the Football Club,” they added.

Rooney became the new manager after John Eustace. Before that, he quit his job as a coach at a soccer club in the United States (DC United). He signed a contract for three and a half years.
“I would like to thank Tom Wagner, Tom Brady and Garry Cook for the opportunity to manage Birmingham City FC and the support they all gave me during my short period with the club. Football is a results business – and I recognise they have not been at the level I wanted them to be. However, time is the most precious commodity a manager requires and I do not believe 13 weeks was sufficient to oversee the changes that were needed. Personally, it will take me some time to get over this setback. I have been involved in professional football, as either a player or manager, since I was 16. Now, I plan to take some time with my family as I prepare for the next opportunity in my journey as a manager,” Rooney said in a statement.
The team announced that Steve Spooner, who is the professional development coach, will be in charge temporarily. Before working with DC United, Rooney managed Derby County for 17 months. His team earned 55 points, which was okay to stay in the league, but they got relegated to a lower division because of a points deduction due to money problems.
