According to a report from Express, Lee Sharpe, a former Manchester United player, believes that Harry Maguire might find advantages in being under David Moyes at West Ham.
Speaking to Express Sport, Sharpe commented, “The media scrutiny was intense and harsh for someone solely focused on football.”
“I’m not familiar with Harry Maguire’s personal situation or his discussions with the manager. However, considering a move to West Ham, I see it as a fantastic opportunity.”
Maguire’s Fluctuating Season At Manchester United
At the start of this season, the 30-year-old faced challenges establishing himself as a regular starter at Old Trafford, slipping behind Raphael Varane, Lisandro Martinez, and Victor Lindelof in Manchester United’s pecking order. Nonetheless, in recent times, the former United captain has regained form, tallying one goal and an assist in fifteen appearances across various competitions for the Red Devils.
Displaying consistency, the English player has maintained reliability by averaging 0.9 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, and 3.5 clearances per game in the Premier League. His passing from within his own half has been accurate, boasting an 82.9% completion rate in England’s top flight (statistics from whoscored).
Although his contract with the Manchester club extends until the summer of 2025, uncertainty clouds his future, leaving the possibility open for a departure in the upcoming transfer windows.
Will Ten Hag Sanction His Exit From Old Trafford?
Maguire, known for his robust tackling and adept timing in reclaiming possession in his own half, confidently clears the ball when necessary and displays proficiency in building play from the defensive line. Nevertheless, despite his 59 appearances for England, he’s shown susceptibility to defensive errors in recent seasons.
Yet, with substantial Premier League experience, Maguire could significantly benefit a club like West Ham, aspiring to compete in Europe. Consequently, David Moyes pursuing Maguire for regular play at the London Stadium seems plausible. Given consistent game time, the English defender could validate his value as a worthwhile, long-term addition to the East London club.
However, his commendable performances under Erik ten Hag during United’s injury-plagued phase haven’t escaped notice, potentially influencing the former Ajax manager to retain him at Old Trafford. He might offer increased competition in defence, albeit with a reduced playing role. Yet, considering Maguire’s career trajectory, an exit might better serve the England international.
