In a recent print edition, SportBILD mentioned that West Ham United are among the clubs hoping to sign Red Bull Leipzig ace Timo Werner. It has been revealed that the Hammers could face competition in the form of Crystal Palace and Fulham in pursuit of the German talent.
Werner’s Underwhelming Season At The Red Bull Arena
Werner is having a tough campaign at the German club as he has struggled to be consistent for them on the offensive end of the pitch. The German talent has found the back of the net twice and earned one assist in 13 matches for RB Leipzig this season across multiple competitions.
The 27-year-old has seen most of his game time come off the bench but has done well to average 1.1 shots and 0.6 dribbles per game in the Bundesliga. However, he lacks quality when interchanging possession deep inside the opponent’s half based on his pass completion rate of 70% in the German top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Red Bull Arena will run out in the summer of 2026. Hence, West Ham will have to make a sizable offer if they want to sign the German forward next year.
Is Werner A Decent Fit For West Ham United Boss David Moyes?
Werner can engineer a yard of space for himself to get a few strikes in at goal. He can make a few driving runs with the ball out on the flanks. However, the German sensation has struggled to find consistency with his offensive contributions over the past few years.
We can expect Werner to add more firepower to West Ham boss David Moyes’ attack. He is good enough to rival Michal Antonio for a regular starting spot at the East London club.
Werner has got some valuable experience in the Premier League from his previous spell at Chelsea and won’t take much time to settle into life at the London Stadium. However, he is far from a prolific forward and won’t be a good fit for Moyes’ needs at the moment. Thus, West Ham should focus on signing a more proven goal-scorer in the upcoming January transfer window.
