In a recent report, iNews mentioned that Newcastle United are showing interest in Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips. It has been claimed that the Magpies are eyeing a move to sign the English talent in the upcoming January transfer window.
Phillips’ Growing Struggles At The Etihad Stadium
Phillips has endured a frustrating spell at Man City as he has struggled to nail down a regular starting spot in Pep Guardiola’s first team. The English playmaker has only made five appearances for his current club this season across all competitions.
The 27-year-old has seen most of his game time come off the bench which could be why he is only averaging 0.7 tackles, 0.3 interceptions and 0.7 dribbles per game in the Premier League. He has been accurate when distributing possession from midfield after making 90% of his attempted passes in the English first division (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Etihad Stadium will run out in 2028. Hence, the Magpies will have to launch a convincing offer if they are serious about recruiting Phillips next year.
Should Newcastle United Head Coach Eddie Howe Move In For Phillips?
Phillips is a tough-tackling midfielder who can sense the danger quickly to earn the ball back for his side at the centre of the park. He doesn’t mind putting his foot through the ball when the opposition are on the front foot. Phillips is primarily a defensive midfielder but can also function as a central defender or play as a box-to-box midfielder if told to do so by his manager.
The English sensation is a good passer of the ball as well. However, he has a poor injury record which makes him a risky option for the Magpies to consider this January.
At 27, Phillips is about to enter his prime soon and would be a decent target for Newcastle to pursue this winter. With all things considered, Howe would be wise to move in for Phillips but only if he can sign for a reduced fee during the January transfer window.
