According to a report from Liverpool Echo, Manchester United have identified Sporting CP defender Goncalo Inacio as a potential transfer target. However, Liverpool have also entered the scene, scouting the Portuguese international during a recent international match against Bosnia, which they won 5-0. The 22-year-old now finds himself at the centre of a transfer tug-of-war between the two Premier League clubs.

Inacio’s Impressive Start in Portuguese Football

Inacio has kicked off the current season in stellar form, delivering a series of remarkable displays in Sporting’s defensive lineup. The 22-year-old has appeared in ten matches for the Portuguese side, collecting four yellow cards in various competitions.

This Portuguese talent has shone as a stalwart in defence, maintaining a consistent average of 1.1 tackles, 1.0 interceptions, and 2.4 clearances per 90 minutes in Liga Portugal. Furthermore, his passing accuracy from the defensive half has been notable, with an 89% pass completion rate in the top-flight league (statistics derived from whoscored).

Can Klopp Lure Him To Liverpool?

Inacio consistently demonstrates a remarkable knack for anticipating and intercepting threats, effectively facilitating his team’s regaining of possession within their defensive half. He exhibits a sound judgment for clearing the ball when required and displays proficiency in orchestrating the build-up of play from the backline.

With a height of 1.85 meters, this Portuguese defensive talent is an imposing presence in aerial duels. It’s essential to acknowledge that he has yet to be truly tested at the highest levels of the sport. Consequently, if he were to join the Reds, Jurgen Klopp might need to allow him some time to adapt and get acquainted to the his style of play at Anfield.

Inacio holds the promise of injecting Liverpool’s defense with enhanced tenacity and resilience. At just 22 years of age, he carries a wealth of potential and could potentially evolve into a world-class central defender in the seasons ahead. Thus, the Merseyside club should dedicate their efforts to secure his services, whether it be in January or at the conclusion of the current campaign.
