According to a report from Express, Liverpool legend John Aldridge has claimed that, Jurgen Klopp is aware that he should have pursued three additional signings during the summer transfer window. The ex-striker suggested that his former club should have secured the services of an extra defensive midfielder, in addition to a fresh centre-back and full-back.

When asked about the summer transfer business the former Liverpool forward said, “Some people think it hasn’t been a great pre-season with some of the signings, but it’s not that bad! You look at the two lads in midfield who have come in, in particular – Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai – and they excite me. Having said that, we all know as fans that we all need at least one more centre-half.”

Four Liverpool Midfield Signings

The Reds completed four signings during the summer transfer window, with all of them midfielders. Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai were the initial arrivals early in the summer.

However, following the departures of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson to the Saudi Pro League, the Merseyside club made a surprise signing by acquiring Wataru Endo. They concluded the window by securing a deadline-day deal for Dutch midfielder Ryan Gravenberch. The Anfield club invested approximately £145 million in their four new signings and Aldridge acknowledges that there has been a rebuilding process underway at Anfield.

Should Klopp Have Brought In Reinforcements For Other Areas As Well?

Although Liverpool’s activity in this transfer window was more active than the previous summer, Klopp could only strengthen the midfield, which had been targeted for a rebuild since the last season. Nevertheless, Aldridge believes Klopp is aware that there are still deficiencies in several areas of the team. He doubts that Gravenberch is the solution for the defensive midfield position and acknowledges that Liverpool is limited in options in two defensive positions.

The Reds boast a wealth of attacking talent but lack depth in their defensive lineup, which could become problematic if injuries occur, especially with the season already underway. Taking all of these factors into account, it’s possible that the Liverpool manager might consider delving into the January transfer market to bolster the defence and bring in an experienced defensive midfielder, supplementing Gravenberch and Endo.
