In a recent report, AS revealed that Barcelona want to cash in on Clement Lenglet this summer. It has been mentioned that the Catalan club are looking to sell off some of their fringe players which include the French centre-back in this off-season.
Lenglet’s Impressive Loan Spell In North London
Lenglet had a decent loan spell at Tottenham Hotspur in the previous campaign when he put in a run of solid performances on the defensive third of the pitch. The 28-year-old made 35 appearances for Spurs last season, scoring one goal and grabbing a couple of assists on all fronts.
The French talent was a decent performer when defending inside his half as he averaged 1.5 tackles, 0.7 interceptions and 2.6 clearances per game in the Premier League. He was even accurate when distributing the ball from the back as evidenced by his pass success rate of 87.5% in league football (stats via whoscored).
Lenglet’s current deal at Barcelona will run out in the summer of 2026. However, the Catalan club need to lower their wage bill, so Xavi might be better off cashing in on the Frenchman in this ongoing transfer window.
Should Barcelona Boss Xavi Let Lenglet Go?
Lenglet is a good tackler of the ball and can make a few timely interceptions for his team on the defensive end of the pitch. He doesn’t mind clearing the danger when the opposition are on the front foot and excels at playing his way out from the back.
Lenglet mainly functions as a central defender but can also fill in as a left-back if told to do so by his manager. However, things have just not worked out for him at the Nou Camp thus far.
The France international finds himself on the fringes of Xavi’s squad at the moment. Thus, it is only fair to the player if Barcelona let him go before the end of this summer transfer window.
The Catalan club has to figure out a way to trim their squad and lower their wage bill this summer. Selling Lenglet in this off-season will definitely help Barca as Xavi could use the money generated from his potential sale to strengthen other areas of his match-day squad ahead of the new campaign.
