In a recent report, Calciomercato stated that Aston Villa are set to rival Borussia Dortmund for Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie this summer. It has been claimed that the Villans are eager to move in for the United States international during this summer transfer window.

McKennie’s Decent Loan Spell At Elland Road

McKennie had an impressive loan spell at Leeds United last season when he put in a few impressive displays for them at the centre of the park. The 24-year-old registered one assist in 20 matches for the Whites in the previous campaign across multiple competitions.

The American sensation was a positive influence in both halves as he averaged 1.6 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, 1.4 clearances, 0.7 shots, 0.7 key passes and 0.6 dribbles per game in the Premier League. He was even accurate when distributing possession from midfield after completing 77.8% of his attempted passes in the English first division (stats via whoscored).

McKennie’s current deal at the Turin club will run out in the summer of 2025. Hence, it won’t be easy for the Villans to secure his services on the cheap in this off-season.

Is McKennie A Decent Option For Aston Villa Boss Unai Emery?

McKennie loves a tackle at the centre of the park and can scan the danger well to secure the ball back for his team inside his half. He doesn’t hesitate to clear his lines when needed and is a tidy passer of the ball as well. However, the United States talent has to find a way to improve his productivity in front of the opponent’s goal.

McKennie is primarily a box-to-box midfielder but can also fill in as a holding midfielder or as a right-sided wide player if asked to do so.

We can expect him to enhance the quality of Aston Villa head coach Unai Emery’s midfield. He would no doubt increase competition for places within the West Midlands club‘s squad.

All in all, McKennie would be an excellent option for the Villans to consider during this summer transfer period as he could help them push for a European spot in the Premier League next season. McKennie has already got some valuable experience in English football under his belt and won’t take much time to settle into life at Villa Park.
