In a recent report, Mundo Deportivo provided an update on the future of Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele. It has been claimed that the Catalan club are hoping to tie the France international down to a new contract.

Dembele’s Impressive Numbers In Spanish Football

Dembele is having a decent campaign at the Nou Camp as he has put in a run of impressive displays for Barca in the final third. The 26-year-old has banged in eight goals and secured nine assists in 35 matches for the Catalan outfit this season in all competitions.

The Vernon-born talent has been a consistent performer out in the wide areas and has done well to average 2.0 shots, 1.6 key passes and 2.0 dribbles per 90 minutes in La Liga. He has even been accurate when distributing possession in the opponent’s half after making 83.4% of his attempted passes in the top tier of Spanish football (stats via whoscored).

His current contract at the Catalan club is set to run out in the summer of 2024. Hence, it is only logical for both the player and Barcelona to extend their time together in search of more success in the future.

What Should Xavi Do With Regards To Dembele?

Dembele has got the pace to make a few dangerous runs with the ball out on the flanks. He is an excellent dribbler with the ball and has got the vision to orchestrate some decent chances for his teammates in the final third. The French talent can also chip in by scoring his fair share of goals up top.

When fit, Dembele remains one of the first names in Xavi’s teamsheet at the Nou Camp. He can use his quickness to cause a lot of headaches for his marker out on the flanks. However, the France international has got a poor injury history at the Catalan club.

Still, there is no denying that Dembele is good enough to secure a regular starting spot at Barca if he can stay injury-free in the coming seasons. Hence, it is only logical for Xavi to offer the player a new and improved contract so that the Catalan giants can keep hold of him for the long run.
