In a recent report, The Chronicle stated that Newcastle United want to bring Arsenal full-back Kieran Tierney to Tyneside. It has been mentioned that the Magpies are showing interest in recruiting the Scottish defender in this off-season.
Tierney’s Growing Frustrations At The Emirates Stadium This Season
Tierney has experienced a frustrating campaign at the North London club after struggling to earn regular playing opportunities for them in the Premier League. The 26-year-old has registered one goal and two assists in 36 matches for the Gunners this season in various competitions.
The Scottish talent has made most of his appearances as a substitute which explains why he is averaging 0.7 tackles, 0.4 interceptions and 0.7 clearances per game in the Premier League. He has even distributed the ball relatively well as he has made 78.1% of his attempted passes in the English first division (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Arsenal will expire in the summer of 2026. Therefore, Newcastle will have to launch a sizable offer if they want to recruit Tierney during the summer transfer window.
Is Tierney A Good Fit For Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe?
Tierney can get stuck in with some crunching tackles and doesn’t mind clearing the danger when needed. He is a decent crosser of the ball as well and can make some energetic runs with the ball on the left flank when he is playing with confidence on the pitch. Tierney mainly functions as a left-back but can also fill in as a left-winger or as a central defender if his manager asks him to do so.
The Scottish talent has struggled to compete with Oleksandr Zinchenko for a regular starting spot in Mikel Arteta’s first XI over the past ten months. Hence, it is only logical for him to seek a move elsewhere in search of more playing opportunities in the coming seasons.
Therefore, Tierney will be a good fit for Howe’s needs at the moment. Furthermore, he will also help the Magpies challenge across all competitions in the future.
