In a recent report, Sport mentioned that Arsenal are showing interest in Manchester City playmaker Ilkay Gundogan. It has been claimed that the Gunners could face competition from Barcelona in the race to secure the services of the German midfielder who is set to become a free agent at the end of this month.

Gundogan’s Excellent Form In English Football This Season

Gundogan is enjoying another brilliant campaign at Man City after he produced a lot of influential displays for Pep Guardiola’s side in the final third. The German midfield ace has scored 11 goals and earned seven assists in 50 matches for the Mancunian side this season in all competitions.

The 32-year-old has been a consistent performer in the opponent’s half and deserves some credit for averaging 1.7 shots, 1.2 key passes and 0.5 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He has even been excellent when distributing the ball from the back based on his pass completion rate of 88.2% in the top tier of English football (stats via whoscored).

Gundogan is under contract at the Etihad Stadium until the end of this season. Hence, the Gunners have a decent chance of recruiting him on a free transfer in the summer.

Should Arsenal Boss Mikel Arteta Get Gundogan On Board?

Gundogan has got a knack for scoring a lot of crucial goals for his team in the final third. He can even engineer a few inviting chances for his teammates in the opponent’s half and is a decent dribbler with the ball as well. Gundogan primarily plays as an attacking midfielder but can also operate as a box-to-box midfielder if needed.

The German sensation is a tidy passer of the ball and has previously worked with Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta during their time together at Man City.

Therefore, the German talent will be a good fit for the North London club‘s brand of football and could help the Gunners challenge for the league title once again next season.

At 32, Gundogan might still have a few good years left in him to play at his best. Hence, Arteta should focus on getting the German playmaker on board when the transfer window commences later this month.
