In a recent report, The Times stated that Newcastle United are leading the race to sign Arsenal full-back Kieran Tierney. It has been mentioned that the Magpies are in pole position to secure the services of the Scottish full-back.
Tierney’s Difficult Season In North London
Tierney is having a tough season at the Emirates Stadium after struggling to nail down a regular starting spot in Mikel Arteta’s first XI. The 25-year-old has found the back of the net once and earned two assists in 34 appearances during this campaign across all competitions.
The Scottish talent has seen most of his game time off the bench which explains why he is only averaging 0.8 tackles, 0.4 interceptions and 0.8 clearances per game in Premier League football. However, he has distributed the ball relatively well as he has completed 77.7% of his attempted passes in the English top tier (stats via whoscored).
Tierney is under contract at the North London club until the summer of 2026. However, his current situation at Arsenal could open the door for the Magpies to recruit him in the upcoming transfer window.
Is Tierney A Good Choice For Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe?
Tierney is a good tackler of the ball and can make some timely interceptions for his team inside his half when he is playing with confidence on the pitch. The 37-time Scotland international usually clears the danger when needed and is a decent dribbler with the ball as well. He can also deliver some inviting crosses into the opponent’s penalty box.
Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe can definitely use someone with Tierney’s skillset as he is good enough to offer some healthy competition for Dan Burn (and probably supplant him) at St. James’ Park next season.
At 25, Tierney’s best years are ahead of him which makes him a great choice for the Magpies to consider during this summer transfer window. He has already got enough experience in the Premier League under his belt and won’t take any time to settle into life at St. James’ Park.
The Scottish left-back might even help Newcastle compete for some major trophies over the next few years. Hence, Howe should focus on snapping him up ahead of the new campaign.
