In a recent report, Simon Phillips (via Substack) stated that Chelsea are eyeing a move for Brentford striker Ivan Toney. It is believed that the Blues are hoping to bring the English forward to Stamford Bridge during this summer transfer window.

Toney’s Decent Numbers In English Football This Season

Toney is enjoying an impressive campaign at Brentford after putting in a string of productive displays as the focal point of Thomas Frank’s attack. The 27-year-old has banged in 21 goals and picked up five assists in 35 matches for the Bees this season across all competitions.

The English centre-forward has led the line and deserves a lot of credit for averaging 2.8 shots, 0.8 key passes and 0.5 dribbles per 90 minutes in Premier League football. However, he has to find a way to improve his link-up play in the final third, based on his pass completion rate of 62% in the top tier of English football (stats via whoscored).

His current deal with the Bees is set to run out in the summer of 2025. Thus, it won’t be easy for Chelsea to acquire his services later this year.

Is Toney A Decent Choice For Chelsea?

Toney is proficient at finding space for himself to get a few shots in on-target. He has proven himself to be a decent finisher in the final third and can also create the odd chance for his teammates up top. Standing at 1.85, Toney can be a strong presence in the air as well. However, the English talent is yet to taste any success at the highest level and might struggle to cope with the growing expectations at a top club like Chelsea.

Still, there is no denying that Toney is good enough to add some much-needed firepower to the West London club‘s attack. Plus, he might even help the Blues compete for a major trophy or two and get back to challenging for European football next season.

All in all, Toney would be a great choice for the London giants to pursue when the transfer window reopens later this year. At 27, he is about to enter his prime and has what it takes to make an instant impact at Stamford Bridge if the Blues can devise a way to bring him on board in this off-season.
