In a recent print edition, Sport claimed that Aston Villa are facing stiff competition for Villarreal defender Pau Torres. It has been stated that the Villans will have to rival Juventus in the race to land the Spanish talent this summer.
Torres’ Impressive Run Of Form At The Estadio de la Cerámica
Torres has experienced a solid season at Villarreal as he has managed to put in a handful of impressive displays at the heart of their backline. The 26-year-old has been involved in 38 matches for the Yellow Submarine during this campaign, scoring one goal in multiple competitions.
The Spain international has been a rock at the back for the Spanish club based on his average of 1.3 tackles and 4.2 clearances per 90 minutes in La Liga. He has also been careful when distributing the ball from the back after completing 85.2% of his attempted passes in the Spanish top tier (stats via whoscored).
Torres is under contract at Villarreal until the summer of 2024. Therefore, the Villans could potentially sign him on a cut-price deal in the upcoming transfer window.
Should Aston Villa Boss Unai Emery Snap Torres Up?
Torres doesn’t mind getting stuck in with a few solid tackles to make life tough for the opposition attackers and usually clears the danger when needed. He is proficient at playing his way out from the back but is a decent dribbler with the ball as well.
Hence, the Spaniard would be a great fit for Unai Emery’s style of play at Villa Park. He excels at playing in both centre-back positions and would be a welcome signing for Emery this summer.
We can expect Torres to improve the quality of Aston Villa‘s defensive department and increase competition for places within their match-day squad.
At 26, Torres has his best years ahead of him which makes him a good option for the Villans to consider this summer. However, only time will tell whether he can adapt to the physicality and high intensity of Premier League football.
Still, the pros outweigh the cons of signing someone with Torres’ skillset and experience. Hence, Emery should focus on going all out to snap him up ahead of the new season.
