In a recent report, Sport (via Sport Witness) offered an update on the future of on-loan Manchester City defender Joao Cancelo, who is determined to leave the Mancunian club permanently this summer. It has been revealed that the Portuguese star won’t re-sign for Bayern Munich when his loan spell expires later this year and is now hoping to part ways with Man City as well in this off-season.
Cancelo’s Good Loan Spell In German Football
Cancelo is having a decent loan spell at the Bavarian club as he has managed to be a consistent performer on the right side of their backline. The 28-year-old has registered one goal and four assists in 12 appearances for the German club during this campaign across all competitions.
The Portugal international has been a positive influence at both ends of the field based on his average of 1.9 tackles, 0.8 interceptions, 0.8 clearances, 0.8 shots, 0.6 key passes and 1.6 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Bundesliga. He has even been tidy when distributing the ball from the right flank after making 82.3% of his attempted passes in the German top tier (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at Man City is set to run out in the summer of 2027. However, if the player has his heart set on a move elsewhere, the Mancunian outfit would be powerless to stop him when the transfer window commences later this year.
Should Manchester City Let Cancelo Go This Summer?
Cancelo is a good tackler of the ball and can make some crucial interceptions for his side on the defensive end of the field. He usually clears the danger when required and has got the vision to create a few clear-cut chances for his teammates from the wide areas.
The Portuguese sensation can shoot the ball with venom and precision from long range and is a decent dribbler with the ball as well.
However, Pep Guardiola decided to loan him out to Bayern Munich last January which has now put his future at the Etihad Stadium in serious doubt.
All in all, Man City would be wise to let Cancelo go this summer and use the money generated from his potential sale to strengthen other areas of their match-day squad ahead of the new campaign.
