If a report from the Turkish outlet Takvim is believed to be true, Rangers hitman Alfredo Morelos has emerged as a transfer target for Galatasaray. The Turkish heavyweights are monitoring his contract situation which will expire in the summer and a new meeting could occur in the coming days between the player’s entourage and the Süper Lig leaders.
The 26-year-old Colombia international began his career with Independiente Medellín back in his homeland. He eventually broke into their senior side but flourished his poaching traits while on loan at HJK. The Finnish side made the move permanent before letting him join the Light Blues for a fee in the region of £1m.
Morelos proved to be an instant success at Ibrox thanks to his exquisite scoring record. So far he has netted 122 goals and laid on 58 more in 262 appearances donning Rangers colours. He is the club’s highest goalscorer ever in European competitions, also his timely contribution high up the pitch saw them conquering the long-awaited Premiership crown during Steven Gerrard’s managerial regime.
What’s Next For The Rangers Ace
While he has often been criticized for his on-pitch antics and disciplinary issues, the appointment of Giovanni van Bronckhorst as Gerrard’s successor impacted his rhythm. Not only injuries but also the Dutchman’s defensive style of play slowed down his numbers. Morelos has scored some crucial goals of late, but the new boss Michael Beale wants to see ‘a little bit more‘ from his prized asset.
“When he’s played when the team has needed him, he’s fine – but I want a bit more energy in the final third. Can he provide that? If he can then he’s a better option than what he has been the last few months. Everything I’m saying here has been said to him as well.”
Rangers are working hard to recover the lost ground amid an injury-ravaged campaign. Antonio Colak has shown his expertise while spearheading the attack during Morelos’ absence, but the Colombian’s involvement in the build-up play suits more in Beale’s free-flowing game.
Having said that, the star centre-forward is expected to part ways in a couple of months’ time. He remains the understudy to Colak in the attacking third and the Glasgow giants, therefore, must find an able alternative who would spearhead their frontline in the forthcoming future. There are a lot to play for though in the remainder of the season and it remains to be seen whether the Gers successfully defend their Scottish Cup title.
