In a recent report, La Repubblica revealed that Newcastle United are facing competition from Chelsea in pursuit of Inter Milan star Denzel Dumfries. It is understood that the Magpies remain interested in bringing the Dutch talent to St. James’ Park in the summer.
Dumfries’ Good Form In Italian Football This Season
Dumfries has been a reliable performer at the San Siro this season as he has managed to produce a string of positive performances on the right side of Inter’s midfield. The Rotterdam-born wide player has registered two goals and five assists in 30 appearances for the Italian side during this campaign in all competitions.
The Netherlands international has caught the eye at times on the right flank by averaging 0.7 tackles, 0.7 clearances, 1.1 shots and 1.0 key passes per 90 minutes in Serie A. He has even been tidy when distributing the ball in the opponent’s half after completing 79.3% of his attempted passes in the top tier of Italian football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the Italian club will expire in the summer of 2025. Still, the Magpies has got the financial power to fund a move to secure Dumfries’ services at the end of this season.
Should Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe Snap Dumfries Up?
Dumfries is a solid tackler of the ball and doesn’t mind clearing the danger when the opposition are on the front foot. He can strike the ball with venom from long range and is a decent crosser of the ball as well. However, Dumfries needs to work on timing his challenges well and also, making some driving runs with the ball out on the wide areas.
The Dutch sensation has added some goals and assists to his name and is well-equipped to make an instant impact in the Premier League if Newcastle manage to win the race for him. He mainly operates as a right wing-back but can also fill in as a right-back if his manager asks him to do so.
We can expect Dumfries to enhance the quality of Eddie Howe’s squad and could offer some healthy competition for Kieran Trippier, who has enjoyed a great spell at the Tyneside club thus far.
At 26, the Inter Milan star’s best years are yet to come which makes him a good option for the Magpies to consider in the summer. Hence, Howe should focus on snapping Dumfries up when the transfer window reopens later this year.
