In a recent interview (via The Daily Mirror), Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp praised Real Madrid chiefs for playing the iconic song, ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ after his team’s 1-0 loss in the UEFA Champions League recently.
Klopp said,
“People told me, my staff told me after the game. It is a really nice gesture. We are two heavyweights who meet each other quite frequently in international football. I think it is clear we respect each other a lot.
“Whoever did it, whoever was doing something like that, a really nice gesture, I have to say. Absolutely. I was not angry after the game, but I was disappointed. I would be angry if we would have played better and it was close.
“And then they win because of a penalty which was not a penalty or stuff like this. But in the end that all didn’t happen. Real Madrid were just the better side and I am long enough in the business to respect that.”
Liverpool ended up suffering a 6-2 defeat on aggregate at the hands of Real Madrid which knocked them out of the Champions League. However, Klopp’s men still have a lot to play for as they try to mount a comeback in the Premier League’s top-four race after the international break.
Jurgen Klopp: Managerial Record At Liverpool
As of 15 March 2023, Klopp has taken charge of 419 matches for the Reds so far, winning 258, drawing 85 and losing 76 of those games across all competitions. The German manager has also picked up 2.05 points per game during his time as the head coach of the Merseyside club.
The 55-year-old managed to lead Liverpool to their first Premier League win in 2020 which ended their 30-year wait for the league title. He has also won every other major trophy during his time at Liverpool.
The song “You’ll Never Walk Alone” has often been sung by the club’s fans at the end of matches, so it was a touch of class by the Real Madrid chiefs to play it after their recent win against Liverpool as a gesture of appreciation and respect. Klopp also deserves credit for being humble after such a loss by marking the gesture as ‘nice’.
It’s clear that both Liverpool and Real Madrid have got a lot of mutual respect for one another due to their rich history and winning culture.
