According to a report from Football.London, Chelsea have told Edouard Mendy that he is free to leave this summer. It was also stated that Mendy has lost his place as the Blues‘ first-choice keeper after falling behind Kepa in the pecking order, so he’s been placed on the transfer list awaiting offers from interested clubs.

Mendy’s Struggling Campaign With Chelsea So Far This Season

Edouard Mendy has had a difficult season for Chelsea, with the goalkeeper struggling to replicate the form that saw him establish himself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper last year. The Senegalese shot-stopper has conceded twelve goals in nine appearances and has only kept one clean sheet across all fronts this season.

Mendy joined Chelsea in the summer of 2020 from French club Rennes, and he quickly established himself as the club’s number-one goalkeeper ahead of Kepa Arrizabalaga. The Senegalese international kept nine clean sheets in his first 16 Premier League appearances. He played a key role in helping the Blues secure a top-four finish and win the Champions League.

However, this season has been a different story for Mendy, who has struggled to maintain his high standards. The goalkeeper has been at fault for several goals, and he has made a number of costly errors that have contributed to Chelsea’s poor form.

Can Chelsea Afford To Let Him Exit This Summer?

It would not be ideal for Chelsea to lose Edouard Mendy, as the Senegalese goalkeeper has been a key player for the Blues since joining the club in 2020, helping them win the Champions League and establish themselves as one of the top teams in Europe.

Mendy’s performances in goal have been crucial to Chelsea’s success over the past two seasons, with his shot-stopping ability, command of the penalty area, and calmness under pressure making him one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League.

Losing Mendy would leave a significant void in Chelsea’s squad, as they would have to find a replacement capable of performing at the same level. This would likely be a difficult and expensive task, with top-quality goalkeepers being in high demand and commanding large transfer fees. However, Kepa Arrizabalaga has picked up the mantle once again, giving him tough competition for a regular position this season, so it would be difficult to tie Mendy down at Stamford Bridge with a secondary role.

Hence, it is safe to say that selling him this summer is a good choice for the Blues, as they can look to recoup most of the investment they’ve done in Mendy by asking for a decent fee since his contract expires in the summer of 2025.
