Aston Villa clashed heads with Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium earlier this evening as they looked to grind out a decent result on the road. The Villans made a poor start to the game and conceded the opening goal in the fourth minute when Rodri found the back of the net for Man City. Ilkay Gundogan doubled the home team’s advantage in the 39th minute before Riyad Mahrez got his name on the scoresheet via the penalty spot in the dying embers of the first half. The West Midlands club went into the half-time break 3-0 down on the scoreline.

Ollie Watkins pulled a goal back for the Villans in the 61st minute. However, it turned out to be just a consolation as Unai Emery’s men crashed to a lackluster 3-1 defeat away from home.

Let’s take a look at how each Aston Villa player performed during the match against Man City.

GK: Emiliano Martinez – 7/10

The Argentine keeper made a few impressive saves at the back but still ended up conceding three goals this evening.

RB: Ashley Young – 6/10

He did his fair share of defending but looked far from convincing at the back.

CB: Ezri Konsa – 6.5/10

Konsa kept a good shape at the back and was accurate with his passing.

CB: Calum Chambers – 5/10

Chambers earned the ball back a few times but looked shaky at the back.

LB: Lucas Digne – 5.5/10

The French full-back had a difficult first half and was replaced in the 59th minute.

RM: Jacob Ramsey – 5.5/10

Ramsey tried his best to protect his backline but failed to do so. At least, he was accurate with his passing.

CM: Boubacar Kamara – 6/10

He struggled to get into the rhythm of the game and was lucky to last the whole game.

CM: Douglas Luiz – 7/10

Luiz anchored the midfield with conviction and was lively on the ball as well.

LM: Emiliano Buendia – 6/10

He did his fair share of defending but lacked quality in the final third.

ST: Leon Bailey – 6/10

Bailey hardly got into the flow of the game and produced an underwhelming display in the Man City half.

ST: Ollie Watkins – 7.5/10

He scored Aston Villa’s only goal of the game in the 61st minute.

Substitutes:

CM: John McGinn – 6.5/10

McGinn earned the ball back once and made one good run with the ball.

LB: Alex Moreno – 7/10

He was solid at the back.

RW: Jhon Duran – 6.5/10

Duran was unfortunate to hit the post.

RB: Matty Cash – 6/10

He didn’t do much wrong at the back.

LW: Philippe Coutinho – 7/10

Coutinho made a few decent runs with the ball.
