In a recent report, The Sun offered an update on Newcastle United’s pursuit of Sheffield United midfielder Sander Berge. It has been claimed that the Norwegian talent has decided to stay with the Blades beyond this summer despite the Magpies’ recent interest in him.

Berge’s Excellent Form In English Football This Season

Berge is enjoying a great season at Bramall Lane as he has put in several influential displays for Sheffield at the centre of the park. The 24-year-old has banged in four goals and grabbed three assists in 22 matches for his current employers during this campaign across all competitions.

The Norway international has been a reliable performer for the Blades based on his average of 1.2 tackles, 0.5 interceptions, 0.5 clearances, 1.4 shots, 1.3 key passes and 1.4 dribbles per game in the EFL Championship. He has even been tidy when distributing the ball from midfield after completing 79.1% of his attempted passes in the English second tier (stats via whoscored).

Berge is under contract at Sheffield United until the summer of 2024. However, it seems like he has now chosen to stay with the Blades until the end of next season which will be a bitter pill to swallow for the Magpies.

Berge Set To Stay With Sheffield Until 2024: Big Blow For Newcastle United?

Berge can offer decent protection for his teammates at the back but is more renowned for his offensive skill set. He can shoot the ball purely and with venom from long range and has got the vision to engineer some meaningful chances for his teammates in the final third.

The Norway international can even make some driving runs with the ball from midfield. Standing at 1.95m, he is a commanding presence at the centre of the park and would have been a great addition to Newcastle‘s squad this summer.

At 24, Berge’s prime years are ahead of him, and could go on to become a future star in English football as long as he continues to develop with each season.

Berge’s decision to stay for the duration of his Sheffield United contract will be a big blow for the Magpies as they could have used someone of his quality to bolster their squad for next season. Now, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe will now have no choice but to focus on some of his other midfield targets as he looks to bring some success to St. James’ Park over the next few years.
