In a recent interview with Sky Sports, reporter Philipp Hinze mentioned that Red Bull Leipzig defender Josko Gvardiol wants to join Liverpool. Hinze said,
“The fans love him, but they know Gvardiol will not end his career at Leipzig. He’s said Liverpool is his (ideal) team. They can buy the release clause. He can be the world’s best defender in the next three to five years.”
Gvardiol’s Impressive Form In German Football This Season
Gvardiol is having a fine campaign at the Red Bull Arena as he has managed to produce a run of dominant performances at the centre of Leipzig’s backline. The Croatia international has featured in 26 matches for the German club this season, scoring one goal on all fronts.
The Zagreb-born talent deserves a lot of credit for being a rock at the back based on his average of 0.6 tackles, 1.2 interceptions and 2.5 clearances per 90 minutes in Bundesliga. He has even been excellent when distributing possession from the back after making 88.7% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
His current contract at the German club is set to expire in the summer of 2027. Thus, it would take a big fee for Liverpool to convince Leipzig to part ways with their prized asset this summer.
Should Liverpool Boss Jurgen Klopp Launch A Move For Gvardiol?
Gvardiol is usually a dominant presence on the defensive end of the field as he can time his challenges well to secure the ball back for his side. He can spot the danger quickly at the back and doesn’t hesitate to clear the danger when the opposition are on the front foot.
The 21-year-old can use his strong 1.85m frame to win his fair share of 50-50 aerial duels and is also proficient at playing his way out from the back. He mainly operates as a central defender but can also fill in as a left-back if required.
There is no doubt that Gvardiol has the potential to become a future star at the highest level. Thus, the Reds will do well to land him in the summer.
We can expect the Leipzig youngster to add more bite and steel to Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp‘s midfield department and help the Merseyside club get back to challenging for the Premier League title in the coming seasons. Therefore, Klopp should think about launching a big-money move to acquire Gvardiol’s services at the end of this campaign.
