According to Manchester Evening News, West Ham United have reportedly reignited their interest in Kalvin Phillips who has struggled for opportunities at Manchester City. It is understood that the Hammers could lose Declan Rice in the summer and David Moyes has identified Phillips as a potential replacement.
Phillips Struggling Campaign At Manchester City This Season
Phillips has experienced a tough debut season at the Etihad Stadium as he has failed to nail down a regular starting spot under Pep Guardiola’s guidance. He has only made three appearances for the Mancunian giants during this campaign which has only seen him come off the bench. Struggling with injuries and not being given enough game time in between could explain why he hasn’t found the back of the net or created an assist coming midway into this season.
The England international suffered a shoulder injury right after his debut which saw him in the treatment room for quite a while. He managed to recover in time for the 2022 FIFA World Cup but his chances with England were limited to being a substitute. It has only been a series of downfalls for the former Leeds United Captain after his departure from Elland road last summer.
Should David Moyes Lure Him To West Ham United?
Phillips usually drops deep between the defenders allowing the centre-backs to go wide and full-backs to move forward on their flanks. This stretches the opposition, creating space for the attackers in the final third.
The defensive midfielder is adept at delivering long passes accurately allowing him to split the opposition and proficiently set up his teammates in front of the goal. Furthermore, he has a strong presence in the central areas of the pitch and can time his tackles well to earn the ball back from the opposition.
His arrival at the Etihad hasn’t been smooth but if he joins West Ham then that would demand tough competition in the holding positions. A move to the London stadium would be beneficial for Kalvin Phillips as he would be getting more game time under David Moyes and he could very well become a regular starter for them while rejuvenating his career.
