In a recent report, Calciomercato claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are in pole position to sign Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni. It has been revealed that Spurs are leading the race to secure the services of the Italian centre-back next year.
Bastoni’s Solid Run Of Form In European Football This Season
Bastoni is having a solid campaign at San Siro after producing a handful of dominant performances for Inter on the defensive third of the field. The Italian talent has made 16 appearances for the Italian club this season, picking up three assists in various competitions.
The 23-year-old has been a reliable performer at the heart of Inter’s backline as he is averaging 1.4 tackles, 1.2 interceptions and 2.8 clearances per game in the UEFA Champions League. He has even taken care of the ball when distributing possession from the back based on his pass success rate of 87.5% in European football (stats via whoscored).
Bastoni is under contract at the Milan club until the summer of 2024. Thus, Spurs might have a good shot at landing the Italian defensive ace on the cheap at the end of this campaign when he will have a year left to run in his deal at San Siro.
Is Alessandro Bastoni The Right Fit For Tottenham Hotspur Boss Antonio Conte?
Bastoni can get stuck in with some crunching tackles to make life tough for the opposition attackers. He can scan the danger quickly to secure the ball back for his side on the defensive end of the field. The Italian talent usually clears the danger when required and can use his powerful 1.90m frame to win his fair share of aerial duels. He is also proficient at playing his way out from the back.
We can expect Bastoni to add more bite and steel to Antonio Conte‘s defensive department at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. He is good enough to earn a regular spot in Spurs‘ first XI and could help the North London giants challenge for a top-four place in the Premier League over the next few seasons.
At 23, the Italian centre-back will only get better in the coming years. He would be a decent fit for Conte’s style of play in English football as long as he can cope with the physical side and high intensity of playing regularly in the Premier League.
Bastoni could even go on to establish a solid defensive partnership with Cristian Romero and Davinson Sanchez at the London club in the future.
