Liverpool will face Aston Villa on Monday evening at Villa Park as both teams make their return to Premier League after Christmas. The Merseyside club returned to action against Manchester City in the Carabao Cup suffering a narrow 3-2 defeat at the Etihad Stadium. The Reds will be looking to up their game in the second half of the season as they’ve only won six of their fourteen league matches so far.  On the other hand, the Villans have only managed to win five of their last fifteen fixtures, so they will also be hoping to grab a win and climb up the league table.

Liverpool Vs Aston Villa: Talking Tactics

Jurgen Klopp will go with the conventional 4-3-1-2 formation although he is expected to make a couple of changes in the starting XI for this midweek encounter. Fabinho will get to feature from the start in the central areas while Trent Alexander-Arnold makes his way back into the right side of the defensive third.

Unai Emery could make use of the 4-2-3-1 formation allowing Phillipe Coutinho to start in the advanced attacking midfield position while World Champion Emiliano Martinez returns to action in between the sticks.

Team News

Klopp is still dealing with injuries at Anfield as James Milner remains doubtful after picking up a hamstring injury against City. Furthermore, a calf injury has made Roberto Firmino doubtful although we can expect him to recover by then while Diogo Jota (calf), Arthur Melo (thigh) and Luis Diaz (knee) are still in the treatment room.

Liverpool Predicted XI

Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Matip, Van Dijk, Robertson; Elliott, Fabinho, Thiago; Frimino; Salah, Nunez

Aston Villa

Emery has no fresh injury concerns other than Diego Carlos who remains a long-term absentee for the Villans. Phillipe Coutinho, who had suffered a thigh problem, has now recovered, so he may be in line to make an appearance from the start against his old club. Apart from this the rest of the team remains fully fit and available for selection.
