In a recent report from Football.London, it was mentioned that Tottenham Hotspur are showing keen interest in Memphis Depay from Barcelona. It is known that the Dutch forward is looking to exit Camp Nou due to much reduced game time this season. His contract is set to expire at the end of this season, so the Lilywhites could snap him up for free in the summer transfer window next year or acquire him for a cut-price deal this January.
Depay’s Struggling Campaign At Barcelona This Season
Depay has struggled to perform at the Nou Camp so far as he remained sidelined for a lot of games due to a thigh injury. The Dutch attacker has only managed to find the back of the net once with merely appearing for three matches across all fronts.
However, the 28-year-old has given a good account of himself during those appearances after averaging 3.0 shots, 1.5 key passes and 1.0 dribbles per game in La Liga. He was even accurate when distributing possession after completing 83.9% of his attempted passes in the Spanish top flight (stats via whoscored).
Should Tottenham Hotspur Boss Antonio Conte Launch A Move For Him This January?
Memphis Depay excels at generating a yard of space for himself to get a few strikes in on-target. The Dutchman is an accurate finisher of the ball when he’s isolated against the goalkeeper. He can shoot the ball with power and accuracy from a distance and remains an attacking threat in the final third.
The Nederlands international is primarily a centre-forward but can operate as a left-sided wide player when required, which makes him a decent fit for Conte as his versatility could benefit the attacking department. We can expect him to inject more quality and depth into Tottenham‘s frontline. Furthermore, he is well-equipped to provide cover for Heung-Min Son and Harry Kane when required or play as a second striker alongside the English striker.
Depay could prove his worth with a return to the Premier League once again after a disappointing season with the Red Devils back in 2017. A move to North London could be helpful in rejuvenating his career and getting back in form. However, Conte would first analyse his performances in the World Cup before launching a bid for him.
