Newcastle United faced off against Manchester United at Old Trafford earlier this afternoon as they focused on earning a good result on the road. The Magpies made a solid start to the game as they seemed positive in the offence and at the back. The Tyneside giants went into the half-time break holding off the Red Devils to 0-0 up on the scoreline.
However, Eddie Howe’s men couldn’t dominate at the centre of the park in the second half and create chances in front of the goal. The match ended in a scoreless draw despite the Magpies coming in confidently and creating some decent chances in the first half.
Let’s take a look at how each Newcastle United player performed during the match against the Red Devils.
GK: Nick Pope – 6/10
Pope came out to collect loose balls and crosses when needed. However, he won’t be pleased after letting in two goals.
RB: Kieran Trippier – 7.5/10
He cleared the danger when the opposition were on the offensive. Furthermore, he also created decent opportunities in the final third from the set pieces in the first half.
CB: Fabian Schar – 6/10
He was a dominant presence on the defensive end of the field but couldn’t take care of the ball eventually seen limping off the field as he was replaced with Jamal Lascelles in the 90th minute.
CB: Sven Botman – 6.5/10
Botman kept the opposition forwards frustrated for most of the game as he marked the attackers and kept them from scoring.
LB: Dan Burn – 6/10
He did his fair share of defending but picked up a cynical yellow card for a challenge on Cristiano Ronaldo in the first half before being substituted in the 78th minute.
CM: Joelinton – 7.5/10
The Brazilian protected his backline well but was unlucky in front of the goal as two of his consecutive headers hit the woodwork in the first half.
CM: Bruno Guimaraes – 7/10
He offered good protection for his teammates at the back while keeping possession of the ball in the centre of the park. The midfielder was then replaced by Joe Willock in the 78th minute.
CM: Sean Longstaff – 7/10
Longstaff made a positive impact at both ends of the field but struggled to create chances at times from the midfield. However, he provided good defensive cover for his backline.
RW: Miguel Almiron – 6.5/10
Almiron used his pace well to get in behind the opponent’s backline but couldn’t find the back of the net.
ST: Calum Wilson – 6/10
Wilson did well to hold off his defenders to ask the ball to his feet but couldn’t get his name on the scoresheet being replaced in the 78th minute.
LW: Jacob Murphy– 6.5/10
He made a few clever runs with the ball but failed to register a goal. Still, he caused a few headaches for the Man Utd centre-backs as he positioned himself in dangerous areas.
Newcastle United Substitutes:
ST: Chris Wood – 5/10
Wood struggled to get into the flow of the game as he replaced Callum Wilson.
LW: Ryan Fraser – 6/10
He made a few decent runs down the left flank but couldn’t cause many problems for the Red Devils’ backline.
LB: Matt Target: – 5/10
He didn’t get enough time to make an impact.
CB : Jamaal Lascelles – N/A
Came in as a late substitute.
