Newcastle United faced off against Liverpool at Anfield earlier tonight as they focused on earning a good result on the road. The Magpies made a solid start to the game and scored the opening goal in the 38th minute courtesy of Alexander Isak’s clinical finish. The Tyneside giants went into the half-time break 1-0 up on the scoreline.

However, Eddie Howe’s men conceded the equaliser after the hour mark when Roberto Firmino scored for Liverpool. Newcastle ended up losing the contest in injury time when Fabio Carvalho scored from close range. Despite playing well, Newcastle suffered a heart-breaking 2-1 loss tonight.

Let’s take a look at how each Newcastle United player performed during the match against the Reds.

GK: Nick Pope – 7/10

Pope came out to collect loose balls and crosses when needed. However, he won’t be pleased after letting in two goals.

RB: Kieran Trippier – 7/10

He cleared the danger when the opposition were on the offensive. However, he struggled to cause problems for the Liverpool defenders.

CB: Dan Burn – 7.5/10

He was a dominant presence on the defensive end of the field but was untidy with his passing.

CB: Jamaal Lascelles – 6.5/10

Lascelles kept the Liverpool forwards frustrated for most of the game.

LB: Matt Targett – 8/10

He did his fair share of defending and orchestrated two good chances in the final third

CM: Joelinton – 7.5/10

The Brazilian protected his backline really well but offered very little in the Liverpool half.

CM: Sean Longstaff – 7/10

He offered good protection for his teammates at the back and made one good chance in the final third.

CM: Joe Willock – 7/10

Willock made a positive impact at both ends of the field but struggled to create chances at times from midfield.

RW: Miguel Almiron – 7/10

Almiron used his pace well to get in behind the opponent’s backline.

ST: Alexander Isak – 7.5/10

Isak found the back of the net with a terrific finish in the 38th minute. He also had a goal chalked off as off-side.

LW: Ryan Fraser –   7/10

He made a few clever runs with the ball but failed to register a goal. Still, he caused a few headaches for the Liverpool cetre-backs cause of his pace and football IQ.

Substitutes:

ST: Chris Wood – 6/10

Wood struggled to get into the flow of the game.

LW: Jacob Murphy – 6/10

He found it difficult to cause problems for the Liverpool defenders.

CM: Elliot Anderson – N/A
