In a recent report, Marca offered an update on the future of Real Madrid forward Mariano Diaz. It is understood that the Dominican Republic striker is keen on staying and seeing out the remainder of his Los Blancos contract which runs out next summer.

Diaz’s Recent Form In Spanish Football

Diaz played a bit-part role at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium last season as he often found himself behind Karim Benzema in Carlo Ancelotti’s pecking order. The 29-year-old scored one goal and provided one assist in 11 matches for the Madrid club last season on all fronts.

The Spain-born talent saw most of his playing opportunities come as a substitute but did well to average 1.6 shots, 0.7 key passes and 0.7 dribbles per 90 minutes in La Liga. However, he needs to improve his ball distribution after completing just 70% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).

At the moment, Diaz is not a guaranteed starter at the Bernabeu and is entering the final year of his playing contract. However, Diaz would have a good chance of tasting more success if he decides to stay at the Madrid club.

What Should Be Real Madrid Boss Carlo Ancelotti’s Play With Regards To Mariano Diaz’s Future?

Diaz has decent pace under his belt and can make a few promising runs with the ball in the final third. He can be a decent finisher in front of the opposition goal when he is playing regularly and with confidence on the field. Diaz is primarily a centre-forward but can also fill in as a right-sided wide player if his manager asks him to do so.

The Dominican Republic sensation can even create some decent openings for others around him but needs to work on improving his passing accuracy in the opponent’s half.

At 29, the Real Madrid forward could benefit from a change of scenery if he wants to make the most of the remainder of his career. He can once again expect to spend a lot of time on the bench.

Still, Diaz is good enough to serve as a decent back-up for Karim Benzema at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. He has developed a winning mindset at the Madrid club and could help them challenge for some major trophies over the next 12 months.

Therefore, Los Blancos head coach Carlo Ancelotti should focus on keeping hold of Diaz for the duration of his contract before deciding whether to keep him or release him next summer.
