Recent reports from The Athletic state that Manchester United are keen on signing Atletico Madrid striker Alvaro Morata in the ongoing transfer window as Erik Ten Hag looks set to add to his attacking options ahead of the 2022/23 season.
‘It is in that context that United are trying to add to Ten Hag’s options up front and The Athletic understands that Morata is a genuine possibility. Sources say United have held talks over the Atletico Madrid striker, who is thought to be available for €35million (£29.6m, $36m).’ – The report read.
Having come through the ranks at La Liga side Real Madrid, it’d be an understatement to say that Alvaro Morata has had a fancy career in terms of the clubs he has played for – Chelsea, Juventus, and Atletico Madrid. With 151 goals in 391 career appearances, the Spaniard hasn’t been a massive hit anywhere, often struggling to keep up with his form in front of the goal. Nonetheless, his work rate off the ball improves the dynamic of the team to a great extent – dropping deep to create space for the wide players to run into. In 48 matches across all competitions last season, the 29-year-old striker managed to score 12 goals and provide nine assists.
The Last Resort For Ten Hag?
Anthony Martial and Cristiano Ronaldo were supposed to be Manchester United’s options in the striker’s department for the season; however, a hamstring injury to the former has left them with only one centre-forward – who too wishes to leave the club if a suitable offer comes in.
The interest in 33-year-old Marko Arnautovic died out quickly following a fan backlash, whereas Benjamin Sesko opted for a move to RB Leipzig in 2023. While names like Sasa Kalajdzic, Cody Gakpo and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang are also on United’s wish list, there has been no significant development on any of them yet.
The Red Devils have no option but to pursue the Spaniard, especially for the affordable €35 million price tag.
