In a recent report, The Times revealed that Tottenham Hotspur winger Steven Bergwijn wants to leave the North London club this summer. It is believed that the Spurs wide player is a subject of a £17m bid from Ajax ahead of the summer transfer window.

Bergwijn’s Impressive Season In North London

Bergwijn has endured a frustrating campaign at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as he has struggled to earn regular playing minutes in Premier League football. The former PSV Eindhoven talent has been involved in 32 matches for Spurs this season, registering four goals and two assists on all fronts.

The 24-year-old has made most of his league appearances off the bench which explains why he is only averaging 0.8 shots, 0.3 key passes and 0.4 dribbles per 90 minutes in the Premier League. However, he has been accurate with his ball distribution after completing 84.2% of his attempted passes in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).

Should Tottenham Hotspur Boss Antonio Conte Cash In On Bergwijn?

Bergwijn can use his pace to get in behind the opposition defence and can be a tidy finisher in the final third when he is playing regularly and with confidence on the field.

The Dutch speedster can even engineer some meaningful openings for his teammates in the attacking end of the field. Bergwijn is primarily a left-sided winger but can also operate as a right-winger or function as a forward down the middle. However, he has often found himself behind Heung-min Son and Harry Kane in Antonio Conte‘s pecking order.

Currently, Bergwijn is not good enough to get into Tottenham‘s first XI next season. Thus, it makes sense for Spurs to cash in on the Dutch wing wizard during this summer transfer period. The talented wide player can also benefit from a sealing a move away from the North London club as he looks to earn more first-team starts next season which might help him get his career back on track.
