In a recent report, The Northern Echo stated that Newcastle United have agreed on a £30m fee for LOSC Lille centre-back Sven Botman. It has been mentioned that the Magpies are hoping to complete the transfer of the Dutch defensive ace this summer.
Botman’s Good Run Of Form In French Football
The 22-year-old was a rock at the back for Lille in the previous campaign as he continued to produce a series of solid performances for them on the defensive end of the pitch. Botman featured in 32 matches for Lille last season, netting three goals and securing one assist across multiple competitions.
The Badhoevedorp-born talent has been a dominant presence inside his half based on his average of 1.0 tackles, 1.0 interceptions and 4.5 clearances per game in Ligue 1. He even took care of the ball well when playing his way out from the back after completing 88.1% of his attempted passes in the French top tier (stats via whoscored).
Is Botman A Good Option For Newcastle United Boss Eddie Howe?
Botman doesn’t take too many risks when clearing the danger at the back and is usually quick to spot the danger that helps him make a few important interceptions inside his half.
Standing at 1.95m, the former Ajax youth player can use his strong frame to dominate the aerial battle against the opposition attackers and is also proficient at playing his way out from the back. However, only time will tell whether the Dutch defensive ace can maintain his good form in Premier League football if Newcastle United can get him on board in this off-season.
A central defender of Botman’s quality will be a brilliant signing for the Magpies this summer. He will add plenty of bite and steel to Eddie Howe’s defence and would serve as an upgrade over Jamaal Lascelles and Dan Burn at St. James’ Park.
At 22, Botman will only get better with each season, so the Tyneside outfit can expect to make the most out of his services if they can get a deal over the line for him during this summer transfer period.
