Aston Villa clashed heads with Burnley at Turf Moor earlier today as they looked to earn a positive result on the road. The Villans made a good start to the game and got their noses ahead in the seventh minute courtesy of Danny Ings’ composed finish. Emiliano Buendia doubled the away team’s lead just 24 minutes later when he scored with a deflected attempt. Aston Villa went into the half-time break 2-0 to the good.
Ollie Watkins made the points secure for the Villans in the 52nd minute with a good header. Maxwel Cornet got a late consolation goal back for the Clarets as Steven Gerrard’s men secured an impressive 3-1 win away from home.
Let’s take a look at how each Aston Villa player performed during the match against the Clarets.
GK: Emiliano Martinez – 7/10
The Argentine keeper made a handful of solid saves at the back but won’t be happy after conceding a late goal.
RB: Matty Cash – 6.5/10
Cash looked a bit slow at times when defending inside his half but gave a good account of himself in the opponent’s half.
CB: Ezri Konsa – 6.5/10
He cleared the danger when needed and performed well enough to restrict the opposition from scoring more than once.
CB: Tyrone Mings – 7/10
Mings was a rock at the back for Gerrard’s side but will be disappointed for not seeing out the win with the clean sheet intact.
LB: Lucas Digne – 7.5/10
The Frenchman was defensively solid and was quite lively in the final third. He has got an assist to show for his efforts.
CM: John McGinn – 7.5/10
McGinn caused a few problems for the Burnley defenders and was a threat inside their penalty box. He ended the game with an assist to his name.
CM: Calum Chambers – 6.5/10
He did his best to protect his backline and got replaced in the 68th minute.
CM: Douglas Luiz – 6.5/10
The Brazilian kept a good shape in midfield but lacked quality in the attacking end of the field.
CAM: Emiliano Buendia – 8.5/10
He made a real difference in this game and deserves the man of the match award for scoring and creating a goal.
ST: Danny Ings – 8/10
Ings gave Aston Villa the lead early in the contest. He also had a few bright moments in the opponent’s half.
ST: Ollie Watkins – 8/10
He was a constant menace in the final third and scored a good goal early in the second half to ensure all three points for his side.
Substitutes:
CM: Carney Chukwuemeka – 6/10
Chukwuemeka added more energy to Gerrard’s midfield.
LW: Ashley Young – 6/10
He offered very little after coming on in the 68th minute.
CAM: Philippe Coutinho – 6/10
Coutinho struggled to influence the game up top.
