Newcastle United will clash heads with Crystal Palace at St. James’ Park on Wednesday evening, hoping to pick up a win on their home turf. The Eagles will be heading into the contest on the back of a 2-0 loss to Chelsea in the semi-finals of the FA Cup competition, whereas the Magpies recorded a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Leicester City.
Team News
Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson are unlikely to feature in the midweek clash.
“I don’t think either will be involved next week, whether that’s Crystal Palace or Norwich.” – Eddie Howe revealed.
“Maybe, maybe after that who knows? I am not putting a game on it as there are still a lot of unknowns.
“Neither player has really done too much on the grass yet but they are working towards that.
“Thankfully the team is in good form so we are in a position where we don’t have to rush them back but we still have enough games to see them before the end of the season.”
“They will definitely be stepping it up. I don’t think they will be with us, training with the group.
“There will definitely be a handover period for Kieran (Trippier) where he will go with our sports science guys in the near future but that hasn’t happened yet.
“Both players are still with physiotherapists.”
Eddie Howe will probably opt for the 4-3-3 formation; however, he might keep changes to a minimum for the upcoming home encounter.
4-3-3 Newcastle United Predicted Lineup Vs Crystal Palace
Defence
Martin Dubravka will continue to operate in between the sticks for the hosts. The Slovak shot-stopper would hope to put up a strong performance and secure a clean sheet on Wednesday.
Eddie Howe is expected to field the defensive duo of Fabian Schar and Dan Burn at the heart of the Magpies’ backline. Their main objective would be to track and close down the potential openings the Palace front-men might create.
Emil Krafth is a guaranteed starter at the right wing-back spot, whereas Matt Targett will fill in on the other flank as the left wing-back.
Midfield
Joelinton and Jonjo Shelvey are expected to start in the central midfield positions, whereas Bruno Guimaraes will slot in as the defensive midfielder. The duo would be determined to set up some clear-cut goal-scoring chances for the front men.
Matt Ritchie will have to settle for a place on the bench but could come on in the second half of the game if needed.
Attack
Miguel Almiron and Allan Saint-Maximin will take up the wide positions, playing down the right and left-wing, respectively.
Chris Wood will lead the line for the hosts against Crystal Palace in midweek. The striker would hope to get his name on the scoresheet when he faces off against the defence that has kept three clean sheets in their last five Premier League matches.
