In a recent report, Evening Standard reports that Chelsea are keeping tabs on Leicester City centre back Wesley Fofana. It has been claimed that the Blues are monitoring the progress of the French defender ahead of a potential transfer move this summer.
Fofana’s Campaign with Leicester City in Numbers
The 21-year-old is experiencing a decent run at the King Power Stadium. The defender has scored one goal over 6 appearances for the Foxes this season across all competitions.
He has given a good account of himself by averaging 0.7 tackles, 1.3 interceptions and 3.7 clearances per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He is even accurate in distributing the ball from the back after completing 87.6 of his attempted passes in the English top-flight (stats via whoscored).
What Will Fofana Bring To Chelsea?
Wesley Fofana hasn’t had enough game time for Leicester City this season, due to his injury in the preseason. Even after his injury concerns, the defender has been a solid tackler of the ball upon his return and that hasn’t impacted his performance on the pitch.
The French talent is proficient at playing his way out from the back and can use his towering 1.9m frame to dominate the opposition in aerial battles. Furthermore, he has adapted to the physicality and high intensity of English football proving to be a tenacious defender.
An up-and-coming centre-half of top quality will be a major transfer target for Chelsea amidst Antonio Rudiger’s exit at the end of the season and with Andreas Christensen’s contract set to expire in June. Thomas Tuchel has to look for a replacement as they try to strengthen their squad at the back and push for a European place in the Premier League once again next season.
At 21, the future is quite bright for the French prospect as long as he can continue improving his game with each season. We can expect Fofana to bring more bite and steel to Tuchel’s defence and increase competition for places in the starting eleven within the squad. Thus, the Blues should consider preparing a move to bring the Foxes’ defender to Stamford Bridge when the transfer window commences in the summer.
