Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has been ruled out for the remainder of the 2021/22 season with a calf injury that he picked up during the match against Liverpool on Tuesday.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, interim manager Ralf Rangnick said, “With Paul, it seems, after the scan we did yesterday or the day before yesterday, it’s very unlikely that he will play until the end of the season again.

“The doctor told me that it will take four weeks, minimum, for him to recover and, since the last game is at the end of May, I don’t think it’s very likely that he will be able to play again.”

The Frenchman’s £300,000-a-week contract is set to expire in June 2022, but Manchester United seem to have given up on his renewal. While reports state that there is a lucrative £500,000-a-week on the table, at this point, it would be viewed as a disappointment if he puts pen to paper.

The £89-million signing seems destined to leave the club as a free agent in the summer, despite Erik ten Hag’s imminent arrival.

“The expectation is for him to leave on a free at the end of the season. It’s not communicated yet from Manchester United, that’s why we need to wait.”Fabrizio Romano told Five.

“Paris Saint-Germain are the club that are really interested in Paul Pogba. They already had some conversations with Mino Raiola, but it is still an open race. Nothing has been agreed yet with Paris Saint-Germain and Paul Pogba, Mino Raiola will speak to many clubs.”

With just 1355 minutes’ worth of action in the Premier League, Paul Pogba has had a disastrous 2021/22 season so far. It has been pretty much the same story over his six years at Old Trafford, as the 29-year-old struggles to keep himself fit for barely twenty appearances over the course of a season. Manchester United have often failed to dominate the midfield proceedings this term irrespective of the quality of the opposition – losing out on duels, giving away possession cheaply, lack of communication with the forwards – and Pogba has his fair share of blame in the mess.

Chances are, those nine minutes at Anfield were the last time we saw Paul Pogba in the Manchester United jersey.

Perhaps, it’s time to move on.
