In a recent report, Fotomac revealed that Trabzonspor keeper Ugurcan Cakir is on the radar of Newcastle United this summer. It has been mentioned that the Magpies have identified the Turkish keeper as a potential option to strengthen their squad at the end of this campaign.
Cakir’s Impressive Numbers In The Turkish Top-Flight
Cakir is having another solid campaign in Turkish football after producing a run of dominant displays as Trabzonspor’s primary keeper. The 25-year-old has conceded 32 goals and secured 11 clean sheets in 33 matches for the Turkish outfit this season on all fronts.
The Antalya-born sensation has done well to average 0.7 clearances and 9.4 long balls per game in the Turkish Super Lig. He has often gone long with his goal-kicks which explains why he has only completed 62.9% of his attempted passes in league football (stats via whoscored).
What Will Cakir Bring To Newcastle United?
Cakir has proven his worth as a solid presence in between the sticks for Trabzonspor over the past couple of seasons. He has decent reflexes that help him make a few world-class saves at the back. Cakir doesn’t mind coming out of his lines to clear the danger when the opposition are on the front foot.
Furthermore, the 17-time Turkey international is a good handler of the ball. As mentioned earlier, he has often gone long with his passing which will suit Eddie Howe‘s playing style at Newcastle. However, the Super Lig talent needs to take care of possession a bit better when being closed down by the opposition attackers.
Recruiting Cakir will no doubt be a wise move for the Magpies as he will be an upgrade over Martin Dubravka who has endured an up and down season at the Tyneside club so far.
At 25, the Trabzonspor custodian has his best years ahead of him, so Howe can expect to make the most of his services if he can find a way to lure him to St. James’ Park this summer. We can expect Cakir to bring a lot of quality to Newcastle’s goalkeeping department and could help them challenge for a European place in Premier League football over the next few years.
