In a recent report, The Athletic stated that Ben Johnson is enjoying his life at West Ham United. It has been claimed that the English full-back is happy at the London Stadium after penning a contract extension with the Hammers until the summer of 2024 recently.
Johnson’s Decent Season In English Football
Johnson has enjoyed a solid campaign with the East London outfit as he has put in some impressive displays on the right side of David Moyes’ defence. The 22-year-old has made 21 appearances for West Ham this season, scoring one goal in the process across multiple competitions.
The London-born sensation has been a consistent performer at the English capital based on his average of 2.0 tackles, 1.2 interceptions, 2.5 clearances and 0.5 dribbles per game in the Premier League. However, he needs to take care of the ball a bit better when distributing it from the back after making 69.3% of his attempted passes in the English first division (stats via whoscored).
Should West Ham United Offer Johnson A New Contract?
Johnson has got decent pace under his belt and can make some driving runs with the ball down the right-wing. He can get stuck in with some solid tackles to make life difficult for the opposition and can even earn the ball back inside his half.
The English defensive ace usually clears his lines when the opposition are on the front foot and can even make some important recovering runs at the back. However, as mentioned earlier, he needs to work on improving his passing if he intends to become a top player at the highest level.
At 22, Johnson has still got a lot of time to make himself a regular feature in top-flight football. Thus, it makes a lot of sense for the Hammers to offer the English youngster a new contract.
Johnson has shown that he is good enough to be a regular right-back in David Moyes‘ West Ham first XI over the next few years. Thus, it is only logical for both the player and the East London club to extend their time together in search of some success in the coming seasons.
