In a recent report, Planet Sport stated that Leeds United are keeping a keen eye on Club Deportivo Universidad Católica midfielder Marcelino Nunez. It has been revealed that the Whites could face stiff competition from Southampton, Brighton & Hove Albion, Everton and Wolverhampton Wanderers in pursuit of the Chile international.
Nunez’s Impressive Rise In Chilean Football
Nunez has established himself as a regular starter in the Chilean top-flight and has done well to put in a few productive displays for Universidad Catolica over the past 18 months.
The 21-year-old has participated in 65 matches for the Chilean outfit so far, scoring ten goals and picking up 11 assists across various competitions. The nine-time Chile international has shown glimpses of his potential since breaking out as a first-team starter back in his home country back in 2020. Hence, it is no surprise that Leeds are one of the clubs monitoring his progress in South American football.
Is Nunez The Right Fit For The Whites?
Nunez has done well to transform himself into a decent anchorman in midfield. He has also got the knack to create some inviting chances for his teammates in the attacking third of the field. The Chile international can even chip in by scoring some important goals from midfield and can keep possession moving with conviction at the centre of the park. He also doesn’t shy away from working hard while defending inside his half.
Leeds can definitely use someone of Nunez’s skill set and potential as the midfield has been a problem area for the West Yorkshire outfit this season.
Nunez will no doubt enhance the depth of the Whites‘ match-day squad and could go on to become a fan-favourite at Elland Road in the coming seasons.
However, Leeds United need to be patient if they are to see the best out of Nunez as the youngster is still quite raw and would need time to settle into life in English football if the Yorkshire side end up winning the race to secure his signature at the end of this campaign.
