In a recent interview (via The Guardian), Manchester United boss Ralf Rangnick offered an update on the future of Edison Cavani who has decided to stay until the end of this campaign. Rangnick said,

“I told him that if it was up to me I would want him to stay and I had a conversation with him [last Thursday].

“Not only because I told him that he should stay or has to stay, he did it on his own behalf, and he told me that I can rely on him to stay until the end of the season and give his very best.

“He’s happy to play. But even if he’s not playing, he will be trying to be the best possible role model for the other players and for me this is good news because Edi is one of those players who, with his vast amount of experience, with his mentality, his work ethic, I think he could really be a perfect role model.”

Cavani’s Lack Of Regular Game Time In Premier League Football

Cavani has served as a decent squad player at Old Trafford during this campaign but has often found himself behind Cristiano Ronaldo in Man United‘s pecking order. The 34-year-old has found the back of the net on two occasions in 12 matches for the Red Devils this season across all fronts.

The experienced Uruguay international has made half of his league appearances off the bench which explains why he is only averaging 1.8 shots, 0.3 key passes and 0.5 dribbles per game in the Premier League. However, he has linked up play relatively well in the final third, based on his pass completion rate of 77.2% in top-flight football (stats via whoscored).

Cavani Wants To Stay Until Next Summer: Big Boost For Manchester United?

Cavani has got a wealth of experience of playing at the highest level and remains an excellent finisher in front of the opposition goal. He can interchange possession with conviction with others around him and doesn’t mind setting up a goal-scoring chance for someone else in the final third.

The 126-time Uruguay international has still got a good work ethic but has lost a yard of pace from his game. He has shown in recent weeks that he can do a good job for Ralf Rangnick‘s side when given the nod to start matches alongside Cristiano Ronaldo up top.

Hence, the fact that Cavani wants to stay at Old Trafford until the end of this campaign will be a big boost for the Mancunian club and their chances of securing a top-four finish in the Premier League this year.
