Newcastle United locked horns with Leeds United at Elland Road earlier this afternoon as they focused on securing a positive result on their travels. The Magpies were solid in the first half and managed to go into the half-time interval with a goalless scoreline.
Eddie Howe’s men didn’t get too much of the ball but got themselves ahead in the 75th minute courtesy of Jonjo Shelvey’s excellent free-kick. The match finished with the Tyneside outfit coming away with a narrow 1-0 win from West Yorkshire.
Let’s take a look at how each Newcastle United player performed during the contest against the Whites.
GK: Martin Dubravka – 8/10
Dubravka made a few crucial saves at the back and earned an impressive clean sheet away from home.
RB: Kieran Trippier – 7/10
The English talent was defensively solid as he read the danger well and earned the ball back a few times for his team. He offered very little in the final third.
CB: Jamaal Lascelles – 7/10
He cleared his lines when required and produced a solid performance on the defensive end of the field.
CB: Fabian Schar – 7.5/10
Schar made numerous important clearances at the back and did enough to keep the Leeds attackers frustrated during the 90 minutes.
LB: Paul Dummett – 6.5/10
He did his fair share of defending but failed to influence the game in the opposition half.
CM: Joe Willock – 7/10
Willock was always looking to get forward and made a couple of inviting chances for his teammates to score. He also completed two decent dribbles going forward.
CM: Jonjo Shelvey – 8/10
The former Liverpool midfielder scored the only goal of the game with a great freekick in the second half.
CM: Joelinton – 7/10
He got back to defend when needed and was lively on the ball during his time on the field.
RW: Ryan Fraser – 6/10
Fraser struggled to get into the rhythm of the game and put in a lackluster display in the final third.
ST: Chris Wood – 7.5/10
He was a constant menace for the Leeds centre-backs because of his size and strength. Wood engineered a couple of meaningful openings for others around him.
LW: Allan Saint-Maximin – 7.5/10
The French speedster made a lot of good runs with the ball and orchestrated a few excellent chances in the attacking end of the field.
Substitutes:
CM: Sean Longstaff – 6.5/10
He added some bite and steel to Newcastle’s midfield.
LB: Javier Manquillo – 6.5/10
Manquillo was solid at the back.
CB: Ciaran Clark – 6/10
He made a couple of clearances after coming off the bench.
